What a step free bathroom involves
We build the room so the floor runs at one height from the doorway right through to the shower, with nothing to step over and enough space to move around comfortably.
It suits you if you’re thinking about staying in the house long term, if someone in the family finds a step awkward now, or if you simply want a small bathroom to feel open.
None of it has to look like a hospital. A flat floor, a vanity fixed to the wall and a rail that matches your taps just look like a good bathroom.
Layout and design
The options worth deciding early
Four choices make the difference between a small bathroom that works and one that feels crowded.
The door
A door that swings into the room takes floor you can’t spare. A cavity slider gives it back and it is the single best change in a small room.
A flat entry
No step at the shower means nothing to trip on and a room that feels bigger. It has to be planned from the start, because it cannot be added afterwards.
A wall hung vanity
Hanging the vanity off the wall shows more floor, which makes the room read as bigger, and it makes cleaning underneath easy.
Plan it while the walls are open
A seat, a niche or a rail is easy to plan before the walls are closed up, and we’ll talk you through the options when we’re on site.
Finishes and fixtures
What people choose for a small bathroom
In a small room the finishes have to earn their place. These are the ones that do the most for the space.
Tile
Large format, light coloured
Fewer grout lines and a lighter tone both make a small room read as bigger. It is the cheapest way to open a room up.
Vanity
Wall hung, slim depth
Wall hung shows more floor and a slimmer depth buys back walking room. The change people notice first.
Screen
Frameless glass
Frameless lets the eye run to the back wall. A framed screen stops it and the room feels shorter.
Rail
A rail that matches the tapware
A rail in the same finish as the taps looks like part of the design, and it is there the day it is wanted.
Storage
A recessed niche, and a mirror cabinet
Both give you storage without taking a single millimetre of floor.

Design and selections
We help you plan a layout with room to move, and choose the tiles, the tapware and a vanity that suits the space.

Written quote and contract
Once we’ve agreed on the scope, you’ll get a detailed written quote and a signed contract before any work starts.

The build
Strip out, plumbing and electrical, waterproofing, tiling and fit-off, managed by us and done by the same licensed trades we use on every job. We protect the rest of your home while we work.

Handover
We walk you through your finished bathroom and make sure you’re happy with every detail.

Pricing
What affects the price
These are really two different jobs and they cost differently. Making a small room work is mostly about the layout. Making the floor run level throughout depends on how your house is built. These are the things that make the biggest difference.
Keeps it down
Keeping the layout. If the layout already works, the plumbing stays simple and the money goes into the floor and the finishes.
A concrete floor. A concrete floor is straightforward to bring level, and there are rarely surprises in it.
Deciding early. Anything fixed to a wall is easiest to plan before we start, so it is worth deciding up front.
Pushes it up
A completely level floor in an older house. Some houses do not easily allow it. If yours is one, we will tell you on the first visit and show you the alternatives.
A strip drain. It lets the whole floor run one way, which is what makes larger tiles possible, and it costs more than a square waste.
Moving the toilet or the door. Both give you back room to turn around, and both are more than a day’s work.
An older timber floor. Anything that needs putting right is dealt with first, and we’ll show you and price it before we do it.
