What waterproofing a bathroom involves
We waterproof the floor and the wet walls, seal every drain, tap and pipe hole through it, and let it dry properly before any tile goes on. You get the certification at the end of the job.
It suits you if you’re renovating and want it done to the standard, or if you have a shower that has started leaking and you want the wet area rebuilt properly, from the frame out.
Under your tiles sits a waterproof layer, called a membrane. It’s the part of the room nobody sees, and it’s the part that decides how long the rest of it lasts.

What the standard asks for, and how we do it
The standard is specific about where the waterproofing goes and how each corner and join is done. Here is what it asks for in each part of the room, and how we do it.

The shower floor
The whole shower floor waterproofed in one unbroken sheet, carried right into the drain fitting.
We seal the waterproofing into the drain fitting itself, so the water that reaches it goes down it.
The shower walls
Waterproofing carried high up the wall inside the shower, and the upright corners done too.
We carry it the full height the standard asks for and detail the upright corners at the same time, before any tile goes on.
Where the wall meets the floor
Treated as a join that moves, so the waterproofing can move with the house.
We detail that join so the waterproofing moves with the house.
The rest of the floor
Waterproofed where the rules say, and across the whole floor if the floor is timber.
On a timber floor we waterproof the whole floor, corner to corner.
Holes for pipes and taps
Every drain, tap and mixer sealed through the waterproofing, not painted around it.
Every drain, tap and mixer is sealed through the waterproofing as it goes in, not patched afterwards.
Letting it dry
The waterproofing fully dry, right through, before anything goes on top of it.
We leave it to dry properly before anything goes on top, and that time is in the program from the start.
The standard is the Australian rule for waterproofing wet areas in homes, and the National Construction Code is what makes it law. Exactly what it asks for in your bathroom depends on what your floor is made of and how the room is laid out, which is what we look at when we come out and measure up.

Not included: the tiling, the screen and fitting the taps. Those go on top and are priced separately.

If the waterproofing is part of a renovation, this is where your tiles and finishes get chosen, because they change what goes underneath.

Written quote and contract
Once we’ve agreed on the scope, you’ll get a detailed written quote and a signed contract before any work starts.

The build
The floor and the wet walls are prepared, then waterproofed to the Australian standard by the same waterproofer we use on every job, and left to dry properly before anyone tiles.

Handover
You get the certification for the work, and we make sure you’re happy before we hand the room back.

Pricing
What affects the price
Waterproofing is usually part of a bathroom renovation rather than something you buy on its own. These are the things that make the biggest difference to what it costs.
Keeps it down
Doing it with the bathroom. Waterproofing as part of a renovation costs far less than coming back for it on its own.
A shower with a step. A shower you step into is a smaller area to seal than a room that drains as one.
A concrete floor in good order. Nothing to put right first, so the job runs without a pause.
A second wet room in the same visit. A laundry or a second bathroom done at the same time costs less than doing them separately.
Pushes it up
A wet room or a level entry. If the whole floor is the shower, the whole floor has to be sealed, and that is a bigger job.
An older timber floor. Anything that needs putting right is dealt with first, and we’ll show you and price it before we do it.
A strip drain and a wall mixer. More things going through the floor and the wall means more to seal around.
